MAXTEMP | Prusa Knowledge Base

The MAXTEMP error occurs when at least one of the temperature readouts of the hotend is higher than 305 °C. It is a safety feature that prevents the printer from overheating uncontrollably.
The MAXTEMP BED relates to the heatbed and appears when the heated bed reaches above 125°C.

Troubleshooting

A damaged thermistor cable may trigger the MAXTEMP error. Look for any overtightened zip-ties around the cables leading to the electronics board.
If the printer heats up uncontrollably when first powered up after the assembly, and the MAXTEMP error is triggered, turn off the printer immediately and double-check your electronics assembly! Please refer to the following guides:Mini RAMBo electronics wiring (MK2S, MK2.5, MK2.5S) or Einsy RAMBo electronics wiring (MK3/MK3S/MK3S+).
An occasional glitch - sometimes the heater can be tricked into overcompensating by a sudden blast of colder air. If this occurs, the heater can spike over the recommended temperature and trigger the error. Simply start the process again and monitor the printer just to make sure that everything goes well.
4. Inspect the G-code file or Slicer settings for incorrect temperature values.

Firmware upgraded to 3.12.0-RC1. No problem anymore for PC-CF.
I print at 285°C with prusa PC-CF profile

I had this same issue with PC Carbon filiment. On the advice of Prusa support I updated to a new firmware on the printer and it fixed it. The firmware is currently in BETA but i imagine this will go into a normal release sometime in the future. Thank you fou your comment. You just saved me hours of investigation as I am new to 3d print and just finished assbling my mk3s+ kit. everything was fine until I tried to print prusament PC CF. Same error but bed and nozzle temp were within normal limits. I flashed the beta version and everythint if ok now.

MAXTEMP error printing PC 110/275
I have a MK3S+and I just started printing Prusament PC with the X-nozzle. every print fail on MAXTEMP at differant heights. I have new prusa thermistor installad, same error. I actually saw it spike to 305deg momentarily. I assume this is open circuit or some other software error.

I did these three steps. I did not find any problems. However, I continue to get MAXTEMP error while printing.

Hi, i have problem with PC filament (temp 115/270). Everytime it stopped at the same time and i did everything the article above says and even i switch heat bed and hotend and it still do the same thing. When it is printing the temperature starts jumping from 260 to 280 and so on. and it is not that it warm up or cool it is hapenning in like seconds. Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Purchase pre-assembled, pre-tested, pre-calibrated printer. Have gone through all the settings and re-calibrated, etc, as scratching my head on the issue. Getting the same issue, seems to be intermitent, have tried different prints, scales of same object, etc. initial findings of failed prints seems to be around the same Z, but super odd spikes / lows and highs in the hot end reading on the LCD. Have lowered my temps to 267 when printing PC, odd spikes around Z @ 12mm and spikes down to 255 deg and up to 290 deg. Fan constant at 20/30. The odd spike again around Z @ 18mm. Lost alot of prints so far. Haven't dialed back to PLA or PETG yet, as trying to resolve this. If this failing continues, will try again with other material to see if this is something just with the PC configuration in Slicer, or whichever. It's a shame, as the PC is extremely viable for what the printer was destined to become. Any insight would be very appreciative, this printer has only seen 1/2 roll PLA, 1-1/2 roll PETG, and now barely a 1/3 roll PC.

Mine was a MK3S+ kit, but I've been having a similar issue. Been using it for nearly a month so far. PLA prints great and have done many successful prints. I've had multiple PC and ASA print failures due to max temp error. Gcode previews showed correct temps for these materials as well. Haven't tried PETG yet. Failures have been is somewhat similar spots on the prints, but not exactly the same spots. Seems more random to me.
Have been in contact with support multiple times and they're still trying to figure out the cause. So far they've sent me a new board which didn't fix the issue. I'm also on my third new thermistor which also didn't fix the issue. Even tried a genuine E3D thermistor instead of another one from Prusa. Same problem as before.
My Rambo board version is 1.2e running latest firmware. Weird part is right after the error (within 10 seconds), I look at screen and temps are no higher than 280C. It shouldn't throw this error until 305C as per the article. Hopefully they find a fix soon as I have parts to make that are too big for my Mini.
Mine doesn't appear to have the big temp fluctuations like you described though.

Prusa has released a Beta firmware (3.12.0-BETA1) for the MK3S+ that uses a new thermal model protection. It's supposed to prevent prints from automatically failing due to sudden temp changes and things like the MAX TEMP error. From my understanding of it, instead of failing it's supposed to beep as warning first, then pause and turn heaters off if it still detects an anomly. There's a pretty good article here about it. I flashed the firmware and did the calibration process using Pronterface to send to appropriate Gcodes. So far, both prints in PC Blend that failed for me in the past have printed great. Also have one ABS print that printed fine. I never even got a warning beep that there was an issue. Being a Beta firmware with a feature that has to be enabled using direct Gcode, it's not for someone who isn't comfortable doing this sort of thing. So if you decide to try it, read the directions carefully, take your time and do it step by step. The Beta firmware and instructions can be found here. They say they will have a simplified process to calibrate and run the new thermal protection via the printer's LCD screen once the final release of the software is out. The basic process I used went like this: 1)flash the new firmware to printer via Prusaslicer; 2)perform PID calibration using option in printer menu; 3)run new thermal model calibration procedure using Pronterface to send Gcodes to printer directly; 4)saved and enabled new thermal model protection; 5)did a test print of a PC Blend model with no filament loaded to verify correct printer function. Other than a glitched out LCD screen for a few seconds, the Beta firmware and new thermal protection is working great so far! Hopefully it works for you all as well. Good luck.
