What happened?

This warning appears when the filament loading process takes too long and does not complete within the expected timeframe. The printer shows the message "Filament loading timed out".

The printer monitors loading duration to detect potential issues such as jams, incorrect filament placement, or sensor-related problems. This timeout prevents damage to the extruder or gears.

How to fix it?

  • Ensure the filament is properly inserted into the extruder and not stuck in the spool or guide tubes. Refer to the idler tension screw article for more details. 
    • To check this on Nextruder printers (CORE One, XL, MK4/S, MK3.9/S), open the idler by lifting the idler swivel, so that the idler lever can be rotated open. 
    • On MK3.5/S, release the idler tension screw to rotate the idler door open. 
    • On MINI/+, inspect visibly the Bowden PTFE tube for stuck filament, and open the idler by loosening the tension screw

  • Cut the filament end at a clean 45° angle to help it feed smoothly.
  • Manually unload and reload the filament from the LCD Menu > Filament submenu.
  • Check for any filament debris or grinding residue in the extruder gears or filament sensor area.
  • Verify the cleaning and functioning of the filament sensor. 
  • If the loading issues persist, recalibrate the filament sensor, navigating to LCD Menu -> Control -> Calibrations & Tests -> Filament sensor calibration. This ensures the sensor is properly detecting the inserted filament.
