The "WATCHDOG reset" error message can appear on the display of the Original Prusa MINI if the system freezes or an operation crashes, for more than 4 seconds. This is a global safety feature to prevent the printer from overheating or causing damage to itself or its environment.

It is an internal counter, which, if not reached will reset the processor on the mainboard, and thus the machine itself. This is a general error, which will overrule any previous error. If another error will happen right before the WATCHDOG reset error, the WATCHDOG reset has the highest priority and will be the error displayed.

Possible causes

USB and Filesystem

There have been documented cases where mounting a faulty USB flash drive, corrupted G-code, or firmware. Moreover, some USB extenders can cause issues due to their quality, or pin-out. If you are using an extender, please try to plug the USB stick directly into the mainboard and see if the error persists.

Temperature

The printer's operational temperature is 16-18 °C (~64 °F). Starting a print below this temperature can cause various errors, like MINTEMP or Thermal runaway. However, this could also cause the Watchdog error which will supersede any error it follows.

Solutions

If you receive this error, the first thing you should try is to:
  • Format your USB flash drive, and/or try a different flash drive.
  • Reslice your G-code, or try one of the sample G-codes we supply.
  • Cycle the power of the printer before attempting another print.
  • Look for any unusual temperature fluctuations. It may be another error 'below' as 'WATCHDOG reset' will always have priority, should there be multiple errors in a row.
  • Make sure the printer is in a room above the stated operational temperature.
If you are unable to solve this error and it becomes a reoccurring issue, please contact our support.

i keep having the watchdog reset when i try to do a selftest. on the very first page where it tests the fans the printer freezes and restarts with the watchdog error. i just installed the Revo Micro with the version 2 mount that utilizes the existing fan so i didn't change anything.

I'm on the latest firmware and also get watchdog error during selftest. I get it between the axis movement and heater tests. If I run each test individually, they work fine, but complete test fails in watchdog.

I also ran into this. I got around it by removing the USB flash drive before running the selftest, and then reinserting it afterwards.

Sadly I get this ALL the time. I'm on the latest firmware and using the original USB drive that came with the mini. I frequently have to reformat the drive and reslice projects (prusaslicer). Not using an extender of any sort and my temperatures are always normal.
1 out of every 3 prints seem to suffer this failure. It's so bad that I am afraid to print any large projects with print times longer than a few hours.
It's just too frequent. I would love the causes to be investigated more closely, or even provide more troubleshooting information on this "red screen of death".

I received this error today. Is there a way to search the printer to see what the cause was? Or do I just try to follow the steps above and hope one will solve it?
thanks!
David

Hi! Usually, on the current firmware version, this error is caused by the USB drive. Use a different one :)

Is it possible that a cause for that error is the HIGH ambient temperature (35-40°C / 95-104°F)? (I had two fails after 4 and 5 hours of printing in a room hot as hell)

Hello. The MINI can operate as such environmental temperature, so the error is not about it. Also, in previous firmware versions the Watchdog error could have been related to temperature problems, but this has been fixed with the latest versions.
